Utility Locating and Mapping at the USF Muma College of Business
Tampa, FL / 2026 / GPR, EUL, Toneable Rodder
The University of South Florida is always expanding and adding to its underground infrastructure. GeoView was tasked with performing a Level B SUE engineering study in the area surrounding the MUMA College of Business.
Prior to the start of the study GeoView personnel reviewed existing as-built drawings and did an extensive site walkthrough to familiarize themselves with the site. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) and electronic utility locators were used to map the underground utilities within the study area. A toneable rodder was employed to help track non-conductive storm water and sanitary sewer lines that were accessible that could otherwise not be tracked by GPR. Identified utilities included power, communications, water, chilled water, gas, storm and sanitary sewer and power. Identified utilities were designated on the ground surface using wire pin flags and colored marking paint in accordance with American Public Works Association (APWA) uniform color codes. The positions of the utilities were documented using an Emlid RS3 GPS system in an RTK mode which provided sub-foot horizontal accuracy. Results were provided in AutoCAD format so they could easily integrated into the University’s infrastructure archives.
